Spring Break 2012: Staycation Day 1

Alright, since I am starting with Friday, and the kids were still  in school that day, I guess it was not day one but lets just pretend. I wanted to start with that day b/c I went to the kids school for lunch and I needed to put that in writing when later in life they complain that I "never" came to their school. Even though we aren't going anywhere this is spring break 2012, I figured why not treat it like all other vacations and give a daily recount of our every move. I can think of nothing more entertaining to read than that...hahahah...not....unless you are me 20 years from now.

Friday started like most Fridays. I got up early and got the kids ready, and then Clark took the triplets to pre school. After big kids were off to school, I went to the gym and spent one hour on the bike. I had a hard time finding a movie that I wanted to watch. Whatever I started on Wed (when I was at the gym on the bike) was boring so I changed it. I watched the first half of some movie called Limitless. Basically it was about a guy who took some pill that allowed you to use 100% of your brain and not the predicted 20% that we usually use. Interesting concept but little far out there. Still, I think I will finish it the next time I am at the gym. I rushed out of the gym to make it in time to meet the big kids for lunch. Alexis asks me at least once a week if I can eat lunch with her. I had made excuses long enough. I sat through both my big kid's lunches. Both of them brought 3 kids out to eat with us. It was at this point that I realized (after asking each of the kids) that MY kids were one of the ONLY kids not going on vacation for spring break. Everyone was going somewhere. Alexis made me chuckle when she was telling people we were spending our week cleaning. I may have mentioned a time or two (or three or four) that we had some cleaning and organizing to do this week.

After lunch I came home and tried cleaning like crazy before it was time to pick up the triplets. Not much got done during those 2 hours, but I tried. Once all the kids were home from school, I had to drive Nick up North b/c he was having a sleep over with his best friend, David (my best friend Cathy's son). See day 1 and Nick already having fun!

As for the other kids....well, they got to have fun by going to the Kidz Depot so Clark and I could have date night. Normally we have small group Bible study every Friday night but too many people were going to miss so it was cancelled. Instead Clark and I went to eat with Stephanie and Matt. We had a great time. Matt picked the place and to be honest after Stephanie texted me telling me it was a "little hole in the wall place," I was not very excited b/c I wanted a nice dinner. This place is called Sal's Pizzeria Italian restaurant. It is located right here in Brownsburg. I was complaining the entire drive b/c I thought we were going to some cheap pizza joint, and I was in the mood for wine. Well, let me just say for the record I was WRONG. I know it doesn't happen often!! This was a great little restaurant and I am so glad Matt introduced us to it. It was a sit down, nice authentic Italian food place. I got my wine (2 glasses..which was more than enough to give me a little buzz b/c it had been so long since I had any alcohol). The food was good and I LOVED the company (mostly Stephanie and Matt....just kidding Clark).

Once back home we tried to rent Breaking Dawn off the TV b/c I still haven't seen it. For some reason it was not uploading as fast as it was playing and after the 10th time of having to restart the movie we gave up and called it a night. Now as I type this (on Saturday) we are trying to watch this movie before it is no longer available (24 hours after purchase).

So that was it. The end of staycation Day1. I will try and take a few pictures each day for the rest of the week so I can add some color to these posts. If I had thought of it I would have taken a picture of Stephanie and Matt last night. Stephanie is looking so cute with her super tiny figure and little preggo belly!!

Week 11 Long Run...DONE

I am very happy to report that I have survived another long run. Week 11. Whooo hooo. Who would have ever thought I would make it this far in training? Not me!! This morning started early. I had to get up at 5am to get myself and all the kids ready b/c I had a 7:30am PT appointment. I think Shane had a meeting or something. No way was I canceling and ruining a good thing. I would have failed at my run for sure. Oh one thing I learned at PT today that was really exciting was that Shane and Keith are strongly considering doing the Cleveland marathon as well. AWESOME!!! They should probably hitch a ride with us and we can all sleep on the way home while Clark (who is not running) drives!!

Today was really perfect running weather. Not too hot. Not too cold (although I was a little cold until I got started). Went to the Monon and hooked up with Jaime again. She had an awesome run today. She never needed to stop and felt great. At first I thought she was going to kill me and I was not going to be able to keep up. Eventually we just fell in stride. I love running with her. I know I say this every week but I really do love it. I think we run well together. Our strides, no matter what the pace, seem very similar and I never feel like she is messing me up.  I am really trying to get her to run the Carmel half with me next month (come on Jaime...you want to...you know it:) With Jaime pushing me,  I got the first 10 miles done. I will post all our splits here in a minute but for that part our overall average pace was 8:18 (much improved from last week).  When I started the run (and it was obvious this week she was running faster) I was a bit worried. The first 4 miles are just never good for me. My legs hurt. I had my stupid compartment syndrome today (from mile 1.5 until just after 3). Still I know that if I can just keep going and get past the 4 mile mark, I get better. That is what happened today. I think that is why I never feel good on my short runs. I always hurt and never get past that point. Oh well.....today I had plenty more miles past the 4 mile mark.

I always get a little sad when Jaime leaves me. I do enjoy my 5 minute break while saying goodbye, putting on headphones, etc. I might miss that on marathon day:) I just kept telling myself I only had 8 more. That was less than what I had already done. There was certainly no way I wanted to start this long run over so I just had to go back out and 'get her done.' The 4 miles out are always the hardest. I am usually thrilled once I have turned back around and am headed back. I guess I felt okay. My legs were getting tired. My feet were starting to hurt. We'll get to that in a bit.... My average pace per mile for the final 8 miles was 7:56 per mile.

Here is the breakdown: Overall average pace for per mile for 18 miles was 8:09 (it took 2:26:39 of running time).
Mile1 8:21
Mile2 8:21
Mile 3 8:19
Mile4 8:15
Mile 5 8:10
Mile 6 8:26
Mile 7 8:13
Mile 8 8:18
Mile 9 8:21
Mile 10 8:18
Mile 11 7:51
Mile 12 7:51
Mile 13 8:03
Mile 14 7:55
Mile 15 8:06
Mile 16 8:05
Mile 17 7:52
Mile 18 7:49

I am very happy and proud of that run! Now back to my feet. They are unhappy!!! I mentioned on facebook that I had blisters. Lord have mercy the one on my big toe is now HUGE. There there is just the bloody toes that I get. Unrelated to the blisters. Here are some pictures of what I see when I take off my shoes.

My left foot!
 My right foot
The largest of several blisters.

I know these pictures make you want to get out there and run right??
Happy training. Very much looking forward to a taper week next week!!!!

All About My Family...by Alexis

Here is what Alexis wrote and read to her class today. I should say she wrote it at school so I had no input in the content of this story! I will type it out just as she wrote it. Clearly I gave her my poor spelling.

All About My Family
My family is sometimes a little crasy. I have four brothers and there names are Nicholas, Adam, Landon, and Ryan. Nicholas likes to be called Nick and on school days in the morning I don't like him. Adam is very nice because sometimes when I come back from school he comes up to me and says, LEXI and gives me a hug. Landon is the smartest out of Adam and Ryan. Ryan, we call him cryin Ryan. We call him that because he crys a lot and he moves very slowly and he gets in trouble a lot too. My mom is a dotor but she doesn't like her job. My dad is a dotor too. He works Tues, Wed, Thurs, and Fri and sometimes Sat. and Sun. But my mom works Mon. and Tues. and sometimes Sat. and Sun. So thats all about my family!!

I would like to add that it is not that I don't like my job. I do. I don't like call. I would like to be a professional "always injured runner" or simply a stay at home mom. I must complain so much my kids think I hate my job!

Training week in review

I think I had a good week of training. I changed my schedule up again and think I really like how this week flowed. If I could continue to reproduce this it would be great but I know our life is busy enough that I sort of have to go with the flow and be flexible about when I get runs in. Here is my week in review.

Monday: REST....always a rest day. Always a round on babies, work all day and call all night.

Tuesday: Ran 6 while waiting for Alexis at gymnastics. While this is somewhat painful b/c it takes 8 laps to make a mile and so you feel like you are going round and round and round which is kind of hard on my legs it was great to get this done while waiting. I always have great plans of doing this run when I get home at 8:30pm and that NEVER happens. I need to continue to use this time and run while watching Alexis.

Wednesday: Went to the YMCA and rode the bike for 1 hour. Felt really good to be back on the bike some. It is so weird how when I get off the bike I have about 10-15 min of absolutely NO pain at all. It is always the best my leg ever feels. I am not sure if the bike stretches out my hip or what. Now my butt on the other hand........(there is a reason I am not a bike rider:) During this time I watched the first half of the Lincoln Lawyer on my iPad (netflix). It was good.

Thursday: I had an entire blog about it. This was my 17 mile run. Loved it!

Friday: Back to the YMCA for another hour on the bike. Finished my movie. Liked it. Need to figure out something else to watch next week.

Saturday: Went to the Monon while Alexis was at gymnastics and ran 8 miles. I forgot my garmin but felt like I was somewhere around the 8:30 min per mile if I had to guess. Really no clue.

Sunday: Ran 4 miles. Nick came along on his roller blades. Pace 8:01. I know I could push myself a lot faster for these short runs but I am so afraid to push things speed wise right now when that is NOT my goal. Plus legs were sore. No mobic in 3 days:(

This week coming up is probably my hardest week of training. I think it is the most miles I have to put in during one week (still only 36 miles for the week). Instead of 2 four mile runs I have to increase those to 5 miles. Still have an 8 miler. The long run will be a daunting 18 miles. Well, I hope everyone has a great training week.

OUCH!!

For once I am not talking about my leg. Last night I had a great time at the movies with my sister and Jenny Bates seeing Hunger Games. I thought the movie was excellent and left still feeling undecided about whether Nick can see it or not. I am at least letting him read the book. When I got back from the movies I was sort of disappointed to see all the boys still awake but my sister's 2 kids were here so what did I expect? At first glance everything appeared to be going well until I hear one of the kids say, "Ryan got hurt real bad." WHAT?? I guess most of the kids were downstairs and Ryan had this not so brilliant idea to get on my treadmill and actually turn it on. Then his cousin decided Ryan needed to go faster and increased the speed. Ryan fell and got stuck between the wall and the treadmill with the belt continuing to go. Ryan got himself free and his cousin turned it off b/c when Clark was responding to his ear piercing screams, Ryan was already on his way up the stairs. This could have been so much worse!!!! I don't think Ryan will be getting on the T-mill again. Clark and I will go the extra step to unplug each time. For the longest time we would put it up after running but our new one is so darn heavy to open I simply can't do it. I was not allowed to look at his arm injury b/c Clark had it nicely bandaged last night. Ryan only woke up once from pain. This morning he was being very brave. The changing of clothes was tough and he is moving a lot slower than his norm but no tears otherwise. I think bath time tonight be the next painful but necessary move.

Here are the pictures I took this morning.

The lesson here is that kids should NOT be playing on T-mills and that Clark and I need to unplug it after using!

West Park With My Boys

We have so many pictures of this park over the years. I guess it will be fun to look back and see how the kids have grown even if it is just the same old stuff in the background. This is how we spent our time waiting for Alexis to get done with gymnastics on Wednesday.

Landon and Ryan on slide
Nick up in window
All 4 boys

Nick

Landon

Having a snack and drink

Seriously have a million pictures of this tractor over the years
Climbing the rocks

Then running down as fast as possible

Ryan

Gave up on trying to get nice picture and just said, "act silly"
Landon

 Ryan
Watching the ducks. The kids were funny b/c when 3 alike (all boys) swam up they were yelling "it is triplets." Then when a girl and boy were together they were talking about them like it was Nick and Alexis.

We look forward to continued warm weather and lots of outdoor time!

Week 10 Long Run...DONE!

You have no clue how nervous I am on Thursday mornings and how happy I am on Thursday afternoons once my long run is done for the week! I seriously was a nervous wreck this morning. I started my day off with an early morning PT session so Shane could work his magic on my back and right leg before my 17 miler. I can tell we have reached that point in therapy when he is feeling like it is probably time for me to spread my wings and fly away. The point where he has taught me every possible exercise and given me every piece of advice but I just won't go away!! I just can't. Not yet. I am willing to space it out for fear of burning thru all my PT sessions in the first 3rd of the year. I am only going to see him now before long runs. Not before taper long run weeks. So basically 3 more times. I am just a little superstitious and when something seems to work I have a hard time changing. So far, I manage to do my long runs on days where he stretches me out, so I am convinced I need this in order for me to make it. See I get addicted to therapy. Not any particular therapist (just to make that absolutely clear for the millionth time) but therapy itself:)  Okay now that we have established I have a physical therapy addiction let's move on to the run itself.

My 17 mile long run was broken down into 2 parts. My favorite part was of course the first part when I ran the first 9 miles with one of my best friends, Jaime. Our goal was to go a slower more comfortable pace from the start. We did that. Jaime is working her way back up in mileage after her return from a second foot stress fracture. She is way too hard on herself b/c while her speed is back for short runs it is taking longer for the long ones. I think she is doing fine and still LOVE LOVE LOVE running with her no matter what the pace. I also know that in no time she will be kicking my butt and I will nearly die trying to keep up. I also know that when we both get bikes this summer and ride together she will kill me there too. Our overall pace for the first 9 miles was 8:57. Here is how it broke down. Jaime might kill me for posting this b/c it has been a LONG time since she has seen a mile pace slower than 9 minutes but keep in mind it was hot!

Mile 1 8:31
Mile 2 8:49
Mile 3 8:42
Mile 4 8:46
Mile 5 8:59
Mile 6 9:04
Mile 7 9:03
Mile 8 9:18
Mile 9 9:25

I will say I felt pretty good during those 9 miles. No real issues at all.
I probably had a 5 minute break while saying goodbye to Jaime, going to the bathroom, refilling water, putting on headphones, etc. Then I headed back out for another 8 miles. I felt okay for the first 4 but was starting to feel my leg more and more during the last 4. I got a little dizzy with 2.5 miles left but that faded. It was hot and I think I did a good job keeping up with fluids and food aside from that one brief episode of not feeling great. Since my first half was a little slower than our norm, I tried to push myself a little harder for the last 8 miles. My overall pace for the last 8 miles was 8:05.
Here is how it breaks downs:

Mile 10 7:56
Mile 11 8:12
Mile 12 8:18
Mile 13 8:10
Mile 14 8:07
Mile 15 8:04
Mile 16 7:59
Mile 17 7:52 (that made me happy b/c I always try and push it in)

I am very proud to have made it to the 17 mile mark. It is a new milestone for me! I'll take it!
Oh and I should mention as for my theory post. Doc says that the Mobic certainly could be causing the edema. I was puffy for about 3 days. I have since gone thru a serious diuresis. This morning alone I had to pee 7 times before my run and I hadn't had one sip of anything to drink. Crazy! Anyhow, I did go have some labs done yesterday to make sure I was not screwing my kidneys. My labs really couldn't look more normal. Okay I had one little thing that was elevated but it didn't matter. My bilirubin was 1.8. Not a number I really care about. My kidneys were just fine. As was everything else we checked. So I figured that meant I was good to go with the Mobic. In fact I took it last night and again this morning b/c of the long run. After my long run I had a message on my phone from my doctor saying despite my normal labs he would recommend I stop it at least temporarily. Ummmm....what?? Normal labs and you want me to make a change. Just kidding. I will try and lay off for a few days. He said switch to Tylenol or even ibuprofen would be better. I was fairly puffy and had only been on it daily for 2.5 weeks. I still need it to work without causing issues for another 8 weeks. So there is the update on that!

Have a great day!

Nick had already come in by time I went out with the camera. Will catch him next time. I think the kids had a fun weekend. We had small group on Friday. Saturday Clark took all the boys ice skating while Alexis was at gymnastics. Then he took all the kids to see Lorax and out for ice cream afterwards. Today was church and just play outside all day. This was our first non hockey weekend in a long long time!!!

Just A Theory

So I am probably crazy but I have a thought.  A few months ago I had a post titled Marshmallow Woman. I think it was on my old running blog that is no longer. At that time I had a weird week where I gained a lot of weight and was puffy with some edema in my legs. Well, I seem to be having a similar type of week.  I stepped on the scale today b/c I just felt well....puffy. My ring is tight. My clothes tight. You get the picture. I am not saying I have eaten great in the last few days but aside from yesterday (which probably was my worst eating day that I entirely blame of being locked out of the house), not horrible. So you can imagine my shock when the scale shows numbers I haven't seen in 2 years. In 2 days I gained 7+ pounds. Ummm..... really??
Fine, I got over that horrible shock and have eaten great today and will be continuing to do so until I am friends again with the scale.

I am getting to my theory soon...I swear. This afternoon I was finally tired of putting off my 4 mile run. I was putting it off b/c I was afraid I would fail again like I did on Friday. I decided that since I was on call I would run the little loop around my house (13 laps to make 4 miles) while Clark held my work phone. That way I could just stop and answer calls and not have to carry a phone. I would not say the run went all that great but I did finally after many stops finish the desired distance. I would love to lie and say I had to stop b/c my phone was going off (actually I would not like to say that b/c I hate the phone). The phone never went off. I stopped after every mile b/c my exercise induced compartment syndrome was totally acting up. That alone never really alarms me b/c I have had it forever and I know how to deal with it. I have described this before but will do so again for sake of having nothing better to talk about. Basically after about a mile the pressure in my shins increases significantly. The muscles swell and everything becomes so tight. I get this horrible pain and for a short time I almost have to sort of slap my feet down b/c I can't dorsiflex my feet when running. The good news is that I long ago figured out that if I just keep going it never continues beyond the first few miles and it gets better and goes away. The other option is to stop after each mile and within minutes the pain will go away. Sometimes I rub my lower legs b/c it hurts so bad it seems like that should help but it can temporarily make it worse. Anyhow, the point is it goes away, and it goes away quickly. The other thing I have learned over the years is that if I keep up with running I don't get this pain anymore. If I take several days off then I will have to deal with it my first couple runs back. Today it was bad. I decided to just stop after every mile and wait the minute or two until it resolved before starting again. That also gave me a chance to check my phone b/c I didn't trust that Clark would pay enough attention if it went off.

While running I was thinking (b/c I didn't listen to music so as not to miss Clark yelling at me if the phone was going off) about my crazy weight gain and worsening compartment syndrome.  Obviously if I am already puffy to begin with it makes perfect sense that my compartment syndrome would act up. Now the only thing different that I have been doing in the last week is that I have been taking Mobic again....daily. Since just before the 15 mile run and then every day since b/c my leg hurts, and I am convinced it helps. So my theory is that it may be helping my leg but not doing much for my kidneys. That is my theory.  It is probably so much more likely that I just ate 7 pounds worth of extra food over the last two days and the extra weight made my compartment syndrome show up today!!!

Not sure what I am going to do with my theory b/c I can not exactly stop the mobic if I want to keep running. Not right now anyhow. I have 17 miles to put in on Thursday. I guess I will just see what happens with my weight and added padding...hahaha over the next few days. I may consider just checking some screening labs later in the week if I still think my theory is possible.

I hope everyone has enjoyed this beautiful weekend! I know the kids are loving all the outdoor time. I took a couple pictures of the triplets that I will post later if I think about it. I feel like I haven't posted pictures in forever.

Week 9 Long Run....Done

Okay so the long run was done yesterday but I completely forgot to blog about it. Life is busy....  It felt really good to type out the title to this post. It is the first time that I have ever gotten to a week 9 in marathon training. Until now I have only made it to week 8 and then I was always broken. I guess that means that no matter what happens I still have made it one step closer to my ultimate goal this go round!! I AM OVER HALF WAY THROUGH TRAINING.........whooo hoooooo!!!!

So I am changing my schedule a little right now. Jaime is available on Thursdays and since she is willing to run part of my runs with me, Thursday will be my new long run day. From a schedule standpoint it makes it a little harder b/c Wed is my mid week semi long run. This Wednesday I ran my scheduled 7 mile run with an average pace of 8:04. I was worried about the long run b/c my leg had been acting up a lot more after that 15 mile run. Still I was willing to meet Jaime and run with her. We met at the Monon in Carmel just like last week. She needed to do 8 and this week for me was a taper week of 13 miles. I had already set in my mind that I was going to go slower for this long run. I was worried Jaime was going to kill me. Luckily the two of us could not possibly be any more alike. Her legs were feeling very tired from her faster Wednesday run. As a result we actually went slower. I think my legs very much appreciated this change of pace. So Jaime and I ran 7.85 miles with a pace of 8:39 per mile. Once Jaime was done, I went back out for the final 5.15 miles. My pace was still slower at average of 8:24 min per mile. Once done I was shocked at how good I felt. Totally different feeling from last week. I was not disoriented on my drive home. I stopped at Starbucks for a frozen coffee. I think that helped a lot. I am sure the woman serving me thought I looked strange with white salt and dead bugs all over my forehead.

I still felt great even when I got home. I had a lot more energy this go round. I was pretty excited that I made it thru a week 9 long run. My legs held up. My back flared a little but I was thrilled my right leg was not worse. I had PT this morning where we stretched my leg, focused on my back some and went over for the billionth time the plan for this marathon......."to finish the race." My therapist didn't take long to figure out that he was gonna have to tell me this over and over and over in the hopes that I follow his advice and not screw things up. Speed is NOT the plan. Slow and steady is how I am gonna finish this training and make it to race day. Next week we are going to do therapy on Thursday at the hospital instead of the Y (I for one am super happy about this change in location:) so that he can stretch me out before my 17 mile attempt. Gosh just typing that sounds daunting.

After therapy today things did not quite go as I had planned. I wanted to ride the bike. I did for 30 minutes. I was gone from the gym so long that I had almost forgotten about army man. He however did not forget me and was thrilled to see me back at the gym. I don't know why this person makes me so uncomfortable but he does, and I can't stand when he comes up behind me!  Moving on..... After the bike, I wanted to do 4 miles on T mill at the Y. Here is where my legs said NO WAY IN HELL! I had some pretty intense pain from the start in my thigh. So bad that I thought I almost was going to pass out. Only those in my family know that is my typical reaction to two things, pain and blood. Growing up I did this many many times. So I stopped after 2.5 miles. I think this is my first failed run since starting this training. I have had some scheduled runs that were never started but it is rare for me to stop once I do start. Still it was the smart thing to do. My leg was excruciating the entire drive home. I thought I was going to have to waste one of my percocets (that I have had since my 2010 surgery and try and save for races when broken). Instead I took a Mobic and things got better. Now I will take that much need rest day tomorrow and try again with 4 miles on Sunday!

I am still very happy to have made it this far. I hope the weeks continue to tick on by quickly. May 20th can not come fast enough.

I hope everyone has a great weekend enjoying this amazing weather. 80's in March. How totally awesome is that. I on the other hand am on call and working all weekend. BOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!! I hate call weekends. I just can't say that enough.

Season Ending Updates for Big Kids

I wish I could say I have a bunch of pictures to post this week to make this post better. I don't. I will have a ton of pictures of Alexis at the State gymnastics's meet but not for about a week when the CD I purchased is sent to me. Both Nick and Alexis had a big sports season ending weekend.

I will start with Alexis b/c I feel like I know the details of her weekend better. Today was the state gymnastics's meet. It was in West Lafayette and we had to be there at 7:50am. Considering the time change, this was going to be a crazy early morning for the girls so Jamie and I decided we would go up last night and share a room. The girls had one last practice during the day yesterday, and then we headed out shortly thereafter so we could go out to eat. We had a nice meal at Olive Garden and then went to the hotel. We let the girls swim for a short time but stressed the importance of getting to sleep early. I do think the girls got a good night's sleep but I can assure you that for Jaime and I it was anything BUT a good nights sleep. There was some couple in the next room who from 1am until 3am talked, laughed, did adult things as LOUD as possible. It was the most frustrating night of my life. I just keep thinking the talking, laughing, etc would end at some point or that surely they would realize just how loud they were being. Finally at 3am, Jaime banged on the adjoining wall several times very hard. It worked b/c things really quieted down after that, but it was still hard to fall asleep. I thought about leaving them a nice little note this morning replaying some of the fun phrases I heard over and over.... but I didn't.

Moving on to the meet. These things just make me so nervous. I tried to tell Alexis that today we were just going to have fun and not worry about scores and places b/c we both know it is a lot harder to place at state due to all the high scores and talented kids. I tried to just keep my anxiety on the down low. The meet itself went really fast. Before we knew it the girls were underway and it as over. This aspect was great for me. Alexis had an alright meet. Not her best by any means but solid. Her scores. Let's just start with what should have been her best event...floor. In the 2 previous meets, she has gotten first on floor. Today she messed it up. She messed up what I would consider an easy part of the routine. I asked her after what she was thinking and I guess she screwed up the split part b/c she was slightly behind on music and was trying to catch up. Tried to stress that missing the trick (not going all the way down in splits, etc) is way worse than being slightly behind. Oh well. There went her best event. She got a 8.95 and did not place on that event. Her first event of the day was beam. This ended up being her best event of the day. She scored 9.25 and was 5th place. On vault she scored 9.3 and was 9th place. On bars she was 9.25 which was 11th place. Her overall score was 36.75 and was 8th place. Again, solid day. Nothing incredibly outstanding but a good overall state performance. She had the highest overall points for her team. The team as a whole did great. I would say that all the girls had a good solid day. We had our highest team points ever, so we were all proud. I was sad that one of Alexis' best friends who was supposed to compete in the afternoon session was out due to illness. I can't imagine how frustrating that must have been for her. I am very proud of ALL the girls on InterActive level 4! Super job!

Nick had his final All Star tournament this weekend. It started on Friday and my mom took Nick to that game b/c Clark and I had Bible Study. He didn't want to be in goal b/c he was worried that my mom would not be able to get his stuff on correctly. Instead he skated out on defense and this set the tone for him playing this position most of the weekend. The Friday night game ended 1:1 tie. His second game on Saturday was an exciting one. I was only going to go to part of it before leaving to get Alexis to gymnastics on time but it was such a good game that we decided to stay the entire time and just go late to her practice. Nick did well on defense and they won 3:1. I missed his Saturday night game b/c I was in Lafayette with Alexis. Nick played goalie and they won 9:2. This morning Clark had a busy morning. Nick had 3 back to back games starting at 8am. Clark had to deal with the time change and drag all 4 boys to the rink very early. Nick played in goal for the first game where we won 4:1. All during the State meet for Alexis, I was texting Clark her results and he was texting me Nick's results. The phone was going off a lot. While we were watching awards for gymnastics the 5th game was going on. Nick played on defense. I think the score was 3:2 we won and were going to the championship. This meant that I needed to get the heck out of Lafayette once the award session was over and everyone congratulated everyone, etc etc. I drove like a crazy woman and made it to the ice rink by the start of the second period for the championship game. The game was disappointing. Nick was needed more on defense so he was not in goal. I was not in the stands but standing off to one side b/c the triplets were all running around. There were several family members of the opposite team standing there against the ice. I never have issues really with other parents but today I did. Maybe b/c I had just spent the morning in the same building as my mom and she makes me crazy with how negative she is and I was already on edge, but I got into it with another mom. We got a penalty (deserved) but this woman was just going off and would not stop. Finally I just said, "they called the penalty my gosh let it go." She goes on to make comments about watching out or I will get to see a different side of her. REALLY......I should have just kept my mouth shut and been the better adult, but I didn't b/c it pissed me off. I started making comments about how she could bring it on. At this point Clark was yelling at me to stop. I did. She didn't scare me though and in the last period she got into it with the goalie mom on our team. Seriously this woman had issues. We lost the game 3:0. That was a hard way to end the season especially since we dominated the tournament but I thought Nick did great job when he was on the ice on defense. I was very happy with how he played!

I am so happy that their competitive seasons are over. Alexis still has 12 hours of practice a week but now they can relax a little and have some fun learning new skills b/c level 4 stuff is behind them. I hope she enjoys this time. Nick being done means we have our weekends back.....YES YES YES!!!! We can go to church again and even maybe have a family meal once in awhile. Next year all 5 kids will be in sports. It will be insane. I just want to enjoy this brief little break from the craziness.

Week 8 Long Run....DONE

This was it....the dreaded 15 mile week. I swore I was not going to do just 15 miles. I was going to do over or under but not 15 miles. So what did I do???? FIFTEEN miles. Not sure what I was thinking. Actually I take that back. I was thinking there was no way I could do another mile and at that very moment I didn't care about all my crazy superstitions. I am so happy to have the long run done for the week.

One of my best friends, Jaime, was willing to run 7 of my 15 miles with me. So thrilled about this b/c I was totally dreading doing the entire thing by myself. This morning was quite busy. I had to get up crazy early to get the triplets ready for school b/c it was muffins with mom day. We showed up as soon as it was open and scarfed down some muffins. Then I was off to a PT appointment. This might have been my favorite PT appointment ever b/c since Shane knew I had the dreaded 15 miler right after the appointment, he just spent the 30 minutes stretching my leg. It was awesome. Very little work on my part, and I think tremendously helped for my long run. I was worried I was running late to meet Jaime, but when I was leaving my PT appointment, I realized I had forgotten my garmin. Had to make a quick stop home. Then I headed to Carmel b/c Jaime and I were hooking up on the Monon Trail. I was stressed about being late, but we ended up pulling in right at the same time. Couldn't have planned it better.

Since Jaime was only scheduled to do 7 miles, we went out and back 3.5 before I headed back out alone to finish. I think Jaime and I run very well together. Similar pace and all. Both of us were feeling a little tired today. I was also feeling like the more than 700+ calories I had eaten in the morning between breakfast, muffins then power bar was probably not the best on my stomach. Lucky for me we were doing to the whole out and back b/c there were bathrooms by the car:) The run was fine. It was a gorgeous sunny day for a run but we could have lived without the wind. It was fine when you were surrounded by trees but the open spaces were more challenging. After the 7, Jaime took off so she could go to work (she does half days on Fridays). I probably had about a 5 minute break by time I went to bathroom, took my gel and put my headphones on. I wanted to listen to pandora but my iPhone carrier that straps on my arm completely tore. That was a bummer. Luckily I had my shuffle with me as a back up. Hate the music that is on it right now but it was better than nothing. Seriously at one point the song Somewhere Over the Rainbow came on. Wanted to shoot myself at that very moment. Mental note need to change music on shuffle.

Finally I headed back out. I went out 4 and back 4 for a total of 15 miles. I think I felt fine on the way out but the coming back 4 took a little out of me. I stupidly had all kinds of fueling food, gels, etc in my car which was doing me no good since I wasn't getting back to my car until the end. I started to get a little weak feeling when I had 2 miles to go. I just kept telling myself I had to make it back to the car. I knew I could do it even if my legs felt like they were going to buckle. Of course I was always against the wind on the way back making that part harder. I made it. I was thrilled to be DONE.  My leg hurt during the run but now that it is over it REALLY hurts. Also have this annoying pain in my left shin just for added fun. Glad I don't have to walk much the rest of the day. Might have to take over Jenny's couch at Bible Study tonight. My drive home was interesting. I felt completely disoriented the entire 45 min drive. Probably not a good idea to finish and just start driving right away. My head was hurting. I could barely focus on the road. I missed my road at one point and there were other times I felt like I was looking around and had no clue where I was or how I had gotten there. Kinda freaky!!

Seriously I have rambled enough. Here are my splits: Overall pace for 15 miles (yes I turned off the garmin when I had my 5 min break when Jaime was leaving) was 8:16
Mile1 8:08
Mile2 8:20
Mile3 8:18
Mile4 8:29
Mile5 8:22
Mile6 8:26
Mile7 8:19
Mile8 8:07
Mile 9 8:18
Mile 10 8:18
Mile11 8:15
Mile12 8:06
Mile13 8:12
Mile14 8:22
Mile 15 7:55 (I was just so ready to be done at this point that I had to go faster)

I hope everyone has a great weekend. Nick has 6 hockey games to finish out the hockey season and Alexis has her state gymnastics meet. Gonna be busy but hopefully fun!

Week 7 Long Run....DONE

I really should have written this post on Friday, but that would have interrupted my Disney posts so it had to wait. Clark did not have any morning surgeries scheduled for Friday morning so he was willing to run 10 of my 14 miles with me. I was super excited about this but first had to go to a PT appointment, and we knew the weather was supposed to get bad soon. Still I rushed out of my appointment so that we could get started as soon as possible. I tried to convince him that since it was calling for heavy storms we should just do my loop over and over (thereby being close to our car). The loop kills him. Too boring for him. He has a 10 mile loop that he likes to do that starts and ends at our house. He felt like we would make it before the storm. I agreed but had my doubts. The one problem for me with his 10 mile loop is that it includes lots of hills. I hate hills. He loves hills. I tried not to complain and just keep running. I know he had to be somewhat bored b/c our pace would have been very slow for him. He would try and talk but I could not talk back much. I just kept thinking that I was still gonna have to do 4 more miles once we got home and if I was only doing 10 I could push myself to go a little faster.

On his loop he stops right after mile 6 at a gas station and buys a drink. That way he does not have to carry anything on the run. When we stopped at the gas station (4 miles from home) I could tell it was getting very dark outside. I kept trying to get him to hurry up. At this time Nick was home sick with fevers and so we did manage to call him and tell him to go to the basement just in case. As soon as we left the gas station, it started to rain. Then came the lightening and thunder and heavy rains. I was not so much worried that I was going to get struck by lightening, but I was rather concerned that my iPhone was going to get ruined b/c it was not in a waterproof case. I was in shorts and tee shirt with no place to hide it. Clark was ready to sprint, but I had to keep yelling at him that I could not sprint at that point b/c I was not going to get injured and I still had a lot of miles to run once home. I just kept saying that if any car stops we are getting in. Car after car passed us and probably thought what are those idiots doing out in this. FINALLY a car passed and was I think just wanting to tell us that the warning sirens are going off and we should probably head in. No kidding!!! I simply asked him if there was any chance he could drive us home. He said okay. I would never have done this if I was by myself but at this point I was desperate. Clark sat up front and I sat in back. The man was very nice just coming off his UPS overnight shift.  Clark tried to tell him to drop us off at the front of the neighborhood but at this point I was like can't he just drive us to our house. He did and my phone survived. I then immediately got on the treadmill for the last 6.18 miles (to complete a total of 14). The treadmill miles were very painful. I go really slow on the treadmill and my knees and right hip were hurting at this point. Still I was so determined to finish b/c I didn't want to have to start this long run over the following day.

So my splits for the run were as follows (it was slow):
Mile 1: 8:14
Mile2: 8:33
Mile 3: 8:13
Mile 4: 8:17
Mile 5 8:14
Mile 6: 8:22
Mile 7: 7:58 (the storm did speed us up)
Mile 8: (well at least the first 0.82 part of it) 7:31
The remaining 6.18 miles was done on the Tmill set at 8:49 min per mile. I am always slower on my home T-mill.

Next week is the dreaded 15 miler. My right hip is giving me more and more trouble right on schedule. This is what happens. Actually it is not as much my hip as my upper thigh part (right where I had the stress fracture last time). Third time is a charm right. I have run 15 miles twice in my life...breaking both times (one labral tear requiring surgery and one stress fracture putting me out of the Chicago marathon). The actual 15 mile run always seems to go fine. It is just after that I can't run. I won't actually stop at 15 miles next week. Will try and at least go to 15.5 or if hurting stop at 14.75 but no chance I am stopping at 15. It is bad luck!

Hope everyone has a nice week!

Disney Trip:Last Day

The last day post will be very short. Basically we got up, checked out and went to Downtown Disney to hang out for the last few hours before our flight home. We ate lunch at the Wolfgang Puck express. We did a bit of last minute shopping, and Cathy had one last final ice cream. I am not a big ice cream fan but did have a frozen mocha that was good. We headed back to the resort a little early and since this was weather wise the warmest day that we were there, sat at the pool until time to catch our bus. Just as we were getting on the magic your way bus back to the airport it started to rain. That was really the only ran we ever saw during our trip. The ride home was smooth. We had a very annoying guy sitting in our row so I was glad to be by the window:) I would call this trip a success. I was glad to be home but had a great time away relaxing for a few days.

This was how I found my luggage once I got home. My new bag was completely destroyed and shredded. Clark was not very happy about this. Cathy's luggage also destroyed with a shredded wheel and torn off zippers. Gotta love the airline for their gentle care of our stuff...NOT!!

Disney Princess Trip: Day 3

The one nice thing about doing a run for fun is that after the race you feel great. Cathy and I got done with the run and went directly to a bus. We were back in our room and showered and ready for the day by 9am.

You bet we wore our medals and I wore my tiara all day.

Aside from the race, I would say Disney day 3 was all about food. No doubt I ate 3X the food that I had just worked off. For lunch we went to Fulton's Crab House. I like this place. I love king crab legs and while I don't get them all that often b/c they are expensive, this day that is exactly what I ordered. I am not even sure why I like them so much b/c they are a lot of work just to eat. My fingers were bleeding by the end of the meal. Still I managed to try and get every little tiny big of crab meat out of those legs.

After lunch it was time to shop a little. Cathy always brings her kids, husband and often other people gifts home from vacations. I don't always necessarily do this. Maybe that is b/c I have 5 kids or maybe b/c I don't want my kids to expect something every time I leave. Probably b/c my kids are already so spoiled and the thought of trying to find something they will actually play with stresses me out. Still I felt obligated since her kids were getting something. The boys were actually easy. We just went to the Lego store and luckily there were 3 small Star Wars Lego's that were new since Christmas (b/c otherwise my kids have them all). Then I got Adam the only remaining Racer cars we don't have. Alexis was much harder. She is not into the princess stuff anymore. When you are at Disney that is about all they have. I basically just called her and asked what she wanted. She said a purse. Clearly she must really be Cathy's daughter b/c Cathy is obsessed with purses. I had not even heard of Dooney & Bourke purses before I went on this trip and Cathy educated me. I guess they are the in thing and hot items at Disney right now. Cathy finally broke down and bought herself one (they are not cheap). I decided to get Alexis a small hand purse. I knew she would have no clue that this was a popular (and expensive) purse but I needed something and she asked for a purse. Each purse is different based on how it is wrapped. I got mine at Downtown Disney and thought it was okay but not thrilled with what was on the front but when I got back to the resort there was one there that was PERFECT. Same purse but different stuff showing up based on how it was wrapped (hard to explain). Since my other was still in the bag with receipt they just exchanged it. I was VERY happy about this and now love this little hand purse.

The purse I got Alexis
Here is Cathy with her purse!
Across the water you can see where we stayed....Saratoga Springs

After lunch, shopping and Cathy having her first Ghirardelli ice cream, we went back to the room to rest. Cathy napped and while I tried to close my eyes this was during the time of Alexis' gymnastics's meet and my phone was going off with a million texts from Clark. I wasn't even at the meet but was nervous for her from Orlando. Clark kept sending me scores and videos of her performances. I don't watch when I am at the meet and I couldn't bring myself to watch the video's he sent either. Made me too nervous. I watch all the time at practice!!! Nothing was her personal best but she managed to pull off another solid meet. She got 9.0 on beam (for 6th place). She had 8.9 on vault. Not sure what happened there b/c Clark thought she looked great. Bars she was 9.0 (2nd place). Floor 9.225 (1st place). Overall she was 2nd place. We were all pleased. The other thing I did during Cathy's sleeping or napping times was read. I finished the Hunger Games and Left Neglected on this trip.
In the evening we went to Wolfgang Puck for dinner. It was nice. We were the first to arrive in the formal dining area so we got great seats looking out and quick service. This was important since we had scheduled massages shortly thereafter. We both had steak dinners that were very tasty.

After dinner we headed back to our resort spa. We both had marathon massages lined up. When I got in the room with the massage therapist she mentioned something about ice. Hold up...stop right there. I hate hate hate to be cold and there is no chance I am paying 150.00 for someone to put ice bags on me. Needless to say we changed my massage to a personal pressure one with stretching. It was PERFECT! I enjoyed all 50 minutes of it. In fact I would say it was one of the best massages I have ever had and she stretched out my legs which was a bonus considering I had just ran 13 miles. After this we were nice and relaxed with full bellies. Considering I had been up since 2:45am and put in 13miles, I was exhausted. We just headed back to our room, watched a little of the Oscars, read until my eyes could no longer stay open and went to bed. This was a GREAT day!
